Nobody wants to be the person everyone secretly hopes doesn’t show up. The uncomfortable truth is that the most irritating people are often the last to realize it. They think that they’re entertaining when they’re actually exhausting. They mistake dominating a conversation for being charismatic and have little awareness of how their behavior affects those around them.

I once had a boss who jokingly told his subordinates, “If you don’t know who the annoying guy in the room is, it’s probably you.” While he meant it in jest, there was a great deal of truth behind the remark. The people who consistently irritate others are rarely doing it on purpose. More often than not, they simply lack the social awareness to recognize how they’re being perceived.

The good news is that social awareness can be learned. Some of the most enjoyable people you’ll ever meet aren’t necessarily the funniest or most successful. They just know how to make other people feel comfortable. They read the room and have the emotional intelligence to understand how their actions affect those around them.

A true gentleman doesn’t walk into a room thinking, “How can I get everyone to notice me?” Instead, he asks, “How can I make the people around me enjoy this conversation?”

Here are ten habits that tend to push people away and what a gentleman does instead.
